Russian Defense Ministry: Ukrainian army has attempted to disrupt the power system of the Chernobyl NPP

10.03.2022, Moscow.

Ukrainian militants attacked the energy infrastructure that powers the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Russian State Secretary and Deputy Defense Minister Army General Nikolay Pankov said during a briefing on March 9.

Specialists from Russia responded in a timely manner and took emergency measures, switching to power supply from backup diesel generators.

“I must note with great regret that the Ukrainian nationalists went on another provocation, a provocation that is extremely dangerous. They attacked the substation and power lines that feed the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Russian specialists have taken prompt measures to switch to backup diesel generator power sources,” Pankov said.

Pankov said that Ukraine’s actions to date regarding the safety of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant indicate that Kiev is interested in worsening the situation around Chernobyl.

“At present, the Ukrainian side is evading in every possible way the organization of any repair and restoration work. In our opinion, this once again confirms the absolutely purposeful and provocative nature of the actions of the nationalists,” Pankov added.

At the same time, according to Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin, “it is very important to note that the Belarusian party is already operatively considering restoring the power supply from the Belarusian power system [of Chernobyl NPP – Rossa Primavera News Agency], according to the permanent scheme.”
