Military expert explains the goals of the Russian army in the operation in Ukraine

24.02.2022, Moscow.

Blow against the political system and the structure of the Ukrainian army is the goal of the leadership of the Russian Armed Forces army in a special military operation, head of the department of political science and sociology of Plekhanov Russian Economics University and expert of the association of military political scientists Andrei Koshkin said, in a commentary for Rossa Primavera News Agency on February 24.

“In terms of demilitarization, this is a blow to the political system and the structure of the Ukrainian army,” Koshkin commented on the military goals of the Russian command. He explained that by mid-day, 74 sites had already been disabled, four unmanned aerial vehicles and one Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) helicopter had been shot down.

“To date, strikes are not carried out against residential areas and cities, not even against the social structure of military camps. We are talking about barracks, rest homes and officers’ residences,” the expert added.

The Russian military has completely suppressed Ukraine’s air defense units (Air Defense), aviation and airfields, the political scientist said. “There were also strikes on depots, and even the headquarters that controlled the actions of the national battalions were destroyed,” the scholar noted.

Koshkin added that the armed forces of the Russian Federation were engaged in this on February 24, while the Donbass militia carried out other tasks. “From the Donetsk side they advanced 7 km, they are fighting fierce battles with the national battalions. And from the side of Lugansk a little less – about 3.5 km, there are also fierce battles”, said Koshkin.

The task of denazification of Ukraine is likely to be solved at the next stage, but not by the military, but by the relevant investigative bodies, the political scientist noted. “We have materials, we will share. [It is required] to cleanse, first of all, Ukraine of nationalists,” the scientist explained.

Throughout the day on February 24, the Russian armed forces are conducting a special operation to protect Donbass from the armed formations of Ukraine.

By the evening of February 24, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the Russian armed forces had disabled 83 Ukrainian military infrastructure facilities.
