Ukrainian nationalist battalions in Donbass will leave Russia no choice. Opinion

22.02.2022, Moscow.

The continued shelling leaves no options for the use of the Russian Armed Forces in Donbass, head of the department of political science and sociology at Plekhanov Russian Economic University and expert of the association of military political scientists Andrey Koshkin said in a comment for Rossa Primavera News Agency.

“The shelling continues. According to the report of the [Russian] Defense Minister at the Security Council, the nationalist battalions are not particularly subordinate to Kiev now,” the expert said, pointing out also that the nationalist battalions have been on the contact line for many years, during which time they have repeatedly demonstrated a lack of proper control.

The President of Ukraine creates an impression of a person that has “not completely decided how he should act,” the political scientist pointed out. At the same time, about 60,000 servicemen of the Ukrainian army, equipped with armored vehicles and artillery, are concentrated on the contact line.

Taking into account the described situation, we can say that “the use of that force, which is already certain to be used, is, in my opinion, a very important element,” the expert pointed out.

“Permission has been obtained for the president to use the Russian Armed Forces outside the state. The time, place and duration depend on the president. Now there is a search for the variant, the most optimal use of the armed forces to ensure security. <…> It is not ruled out, experts say, the deployment of peacekeeping forces in the recognized republics,” the military analyst said.

The main thing, he said, is to ensure the safety of the residents of the republics and to stop the shelling. “The shelling stops and that’s it, the issue is solved. The republics are dynamically engaged in the rise of their economy, the social sphere. Settling their lives, well-being,” the expert concluded.

On February 21, the President of Russia signed decrees On Recognition of the Donetsk People’s Republic and On Recognition of the Lugansk People’s Republic. Following this, Russia and the Donetsk and Lugansk Republics signed treaties on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance.

On 22 February, the Federation Council authorized the use of Russian armed forces in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.
