The less Russia opposes the West, the more pressure it is under. Opinion

The timidity of Russia’s leadership in its confrontation with the West causes less gain at the same cost, political scientist, doctor of political sciences, and professor at Moscow State University Sergey Chernyakhovsky said in a commentary for Rossa Primavera News Agency on February 22.

“We decided to go to defiance of the West, as the United States once decided to go to defy the English crown,” Chernyakhovsky compared the recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR) by Russia. According to Chernyakhovsky, such a move by Russia would meet with natural resistance from Western countries.

“But to live by the principle that we will protest and they will pat us on the back is ridiculous,” the political scientist stressed. In his opinion, if Russia had moved to counteract the fascist coup in Ukraine from the beginning, much might have turned out differently.

“There would have been no more chances against us than there are now, and the result would have been much greater,” explained the doctor of political science. He added that the Russian leadership’s well-meaning attitude keeps slipping into a “slow step, timid zigzag” style. “As a result, the costs are the same and the gains are smaller,” the political scientist concluded.

The Russian authorities do not reach the level of the Bolshevik leadership, the expert assessed. He reminded that in 20 years after the Civil War the Bolsheviks made the Soviet Union one of the leading factors of world politics. At the same time, contemporary Russia has not been able to overcome the same distance that Soviet Russia went.

“And our industry now, if then to the level of the economy of 1913, the industry of the USSR was raised by the mid-1920s, by 1927-1928. And we still haven’t risen in 30 years or 20 years or 8 years to the level of the RSFSR of 1990,” Chernyakhovsky compared.

In his opinion, Russia’s leaders are definitely embarrassed by comparisons with the Soviet Union, but do not have the courage to bridge the gap in one leap.

Regarding the looming confrontation between Russia and Western countries, it should be understood that the less our confrontation, the more pressure we will be under. “The more extensive, more pretentious the challenge we present to the West, the less their contraction will be,” Chernyakhovsky concluded.
