"Blatant double standard" – Russian senator assesses NATO Secretary General's statements regarding Russia

27.01.2022, Moscow.

Before demanding that Russia withdraw troops allegedly illegally stationed in other countries, NATO should start with itself, chairman of the Federation Council Information Policy Commission Aleksey Pushkov wrote on his Telegram channel on January 27.

The senator commented on NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s statement who demanded Russia to “withdraw troops from Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.”

“First of all, Abkhazia and South Ossetia are no longer part of Georgia, their peoples, subjected to aggression of Georgia, wanted to secede, as the Kosovars did in their time, and NATO did not ask Serbia then, but imposed this separation by war,” the Russian politician recalled.

He added that a similar situation was in Transnistria, where Russian peacekeepers at one time stopped the conflict. And they are now there to prevent it from resuming. Pushkov noted that almost half of the half-million population of this republic are Russian citizens.

In turn, as he stressed, there are no Russian troops in Ukraine at all.

For this reason, “Stoltenberg should start with himself.” In particular, to call on the USA to withdraw troops from Syria, to address Turkey with the same proposal, to demand that the US close Guantanamo and withdraw NATO troops from Kosovo.

“In the meantime, it is difficult to take his statements seriously: the blatant double standard deprives them of any meaning,” the senator concluded.

At a press conference yesterday, after handing over Russia’s response to its security proposals, Stoltenberg demanded that Russia “withdraw its troops from Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.”
