Afghanistan exposes scale of opium addiction

02.01.2022, Kabul.

About 3.5 million people in Afghanistan are drug addicts, said Afghanistan’s Deputy Minister of Health Abdul Bari Omar, the Afghanistan TV channel Tolo News reported on January 2.

3.5 million people in the country are drug addicts. Each one of them consumes drugs for about $3 per day,” Bari Omar said.

Considering that Afghanistan’s population is about 39 million, that’s 10 percent of the country’s population. Experts estimate the minimum wage in Afghanistan at about $75 a month.

After the overthrow of the Taliban regime (an organization banned in Russia) in 2001, the level of drug production in the country increased by about 90%. By 2020, Afghanistan was producing about 85% of the world’s opium poppy.
