Opinion. Poland is ready to play any mean trick on Russia to get privileges on gas

06.12.2021, Moscow.

Poland is ready to play a very mean trick on Russia in order to force it to provide gas benefits, said advisor to the chairman of the Union of Oil and Gas Producers of Russia Rustam Tankayev in a commentary to Rossa Primavera News Agency on December 5.

“Psychologically the Poles are ready to solve the problem in such a way that they will play such a very mean trick on Russia that Russia will finally decide to buy Poles for small gas prices, just so they don’t play mean tricks,” said Tankayev.

The expert reminded that in previous years Polish government received subsidies from the US Congress to buy US liquefied gas. According to Tankayev, all this time Poland has been playing many mean tricks on Russia. But the new White House administration refuses to subsidize Poland’s economy.

Now, according to the expert, Poland has to buy gas at European prices, which is about a thousand dollars per thousand cubic meters. After that, said Tankayev, the Polish government asked Russia for preferential supplies of gas.

The expert notes that the position of the Polish government when it wants to bargain for low gas prices from Russia in exchange for the fact that Poland will not do anything nasty to Russia is nonsense. There is no sense in using any conditions in exchange for gas prices as leverage in negotiations with Russia. Russia has never acted within the framework of “if you give us this, we’ll give you that,” but has always focused on long-term cooperation.

“Only a long-term partnership tested for decades can move the Russian government to give some kind of preferences,” Tankayev concluded.

Tankayev pointed out the gas contracts with Hungary and Serbia [the gas price for Serbia is maintained at $270 per 1,000 cubic meters for the first six months of 2022 – Rossa Primavera News Agency].
