Expert assesses the reaction of Russian MPs to the provocation of US congressmen

22.11.2021, Moscow.

Igor Semenovsky, a political scientist, doctor in law, and senior law professor at the Financial University under the government of the Russian Federation, said to Rossa Primavera News Agency on November 21 that the US congressmen’s initiative not to recognize the 2024 presidential election if Vladimir Putin takes part in it and wins, is a logical means of pressure on Russia.

Semenovsky responded to comments by Chairman of the Duma Vyacheslav Volodin on the proposal by US congressmen Steve Cohen and Joe Wilson not to recognize President Vladimir Putin as the head of Russia if he runs for a new term in 2024.

The political analyst noted that representatives of the highest state authority – the president of Russia and his press secretary – quite prudently declined to dwell on the US congressmen’s initiatives, considering it unacceptable to give congressmen “too much honor” with their attention.

In contrast, the expert noted that Volodin commented on the congressmen’s initiative the way it should be commented – US congressmen obviously want to “promote themselves.”

Whether or not the Congress will vote for such an unusual initiative, and what diplomatic consequences it may have, are secondary issues, says the political scientist.

But, the lawmaker says, if Congress does put the issue on the agenda, “there will be debates, viewpoints, and it will all be broadcast by the Western media,” and “opinions in the USA, Europe, and Japan ” and set the ground for additional pressure on Russia.

“One cannot disagree with Volodin’s assessments here,” the political analyst explained, implying the Duma chairman’s warning about the inadmissibility of interfering in the electoral process in other countries.

Kosachev described the initiative of the US congressmen as a provocation which, according to Kosachev, is aimed at “disrupting the nascent normalization of bilateral relations.”

In fact, there’s no point in talking about normalization of relations between Russia and the United States, the expert noted. “It is strange to count on any warming of relations between Russia and the United States, because geopolitics has not gone anywhere, the Russian Federation has not become smaller, our national interests have not become different – such as the desire for sovereignty, independence, the development of friendly relations and the desire for a multipolar world,” he said. “And the desire of the US to preserve its hegemony for as long as possible, including maneuvering between China and Russia.”

In such a political context, the expert believes, the improvement of relations between Russia and the US cannot and will not happen.
