Military expert explains what the USA left behind in Afghanistan after fleeing

25.10.2021, Moscow.

During 20 years of their stay in Afghanistan, Americans did nothing to develop agricultural industry so that the country could feed itself, military expert and editor of magazine Arsenal of the Fatherland declared Aleksey Leonkov said to a Rossa Primavera News Agency’s reporter on October 22.

Leonkov said, “Countries provide humanitarian aid [to Afghanistan] because Americans have been there and they [US forces] have done nothing for the development of the agricultural industry for 20 years so that Afghanistan could feed its population.”

According to him, the Americans gave most of the country’s cropland to the cultivation of opium poppies, which is why Afghanistan has become a leader in the production and supply of drugs in the world.

“When the Americans left, it turned out that nothing was invested in civilian infrastructure at all, so Afghanistan is still dependent on foreign aid. The Americans left Afghanistan, leaving the Afghans only enormous amount of weapons,” the military expert added

Leonkov pointed out that now the terrorists have the large number of weapons, and the financial assets of the country are frozen, i.e. the population is out of money, there is no agriculture — food shortages are growing.

Since Afghanistan in the current situation is close to a humanitarian catastrophe from which the countries bordering it may suffer, it is receiving humanitarian aid so that “the humanitarian catastrophe which is clearly coming will not be painful for the population.”

On August 15, the militants of the Taliban (organization banned in Russia) occupied the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul. The Islamists occupied government buildings and declared themselves the authorities.

After coming to power, the Islamists promised to preserve the rights and freedoms of all citizens in the country. President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani fled from the capital, having previously ordered the retreat of the armed forces.
