"War with Russia" – Russian Senator on how NATO will end up with the accession of Ukraine

21.10.2021, Moscow.

The accession of Ukraine to NATO is fraught with an armed conflict with Russia, the head of the information policy commission of the Federation Council Aleksey Pushkov wrote on his Telegram channel on 21 October.

Earlier, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg once again stressed the readiness of the North Atlantic Alliance for dialogue with Moscow, including the NATO-Russia Council. Stoltenberg pointed out that the alliance regrets the decision of the Russian authorities to close the information bureau under the alliance, since this measure “does not contribute to dialogue and mutual understanding.”

“NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg reiterated that the alliance seeks to improve relations with Russia. I can hardly believe it: there have been too many such statements and too many actions of the alliance to destroy all kinds of relations,” the Russian senator noted.

According to him, relations between Moscow and the alliance may become even more strained and even catastrophic in case of a positive decision of NATO to accept Ukraine into its ranks.

“Ukraine is striving for this. But the alliance must understand: accession Ukraine to NATO makes sense only if the alliance is ready to start a war with Russia. That’s the way things are,” Pushkov concluded.

During his recent visit to Ukraine, United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said that Washington supports Kiev’s aspiration to become a NATO member. At the same time, he stressed that “no third country has the right to veto NATO membership.
