Expert: Child trafficking in Afghanistan is rapidly gaining momentum

16.10.2021, Moscow.

The catastrophic impoverishment of the Afghani people has led to poor families selling their children, the head of the Center for the Study of Afghan Politics, orientalist Andrei Serenko, wrote on October 16 on his Telegram channel.

The reason for the children trafficking is “the collapsed and already low standard of living, the catastrophic impoverishment of the population,” the expert explains. The orientalist notes that some children, for example younger ones, are sold to feed others (older ones) or to save money for treatment.

“In fact, a ‘children’s market’ is being formed in the country. To date, a girl can be bought for about 10 thousand Afghan Afghanis, a boy will cost 20 thousand Afghan Afghanis,” explains Serenko.

The expert explains that it is all about the deplorable results of the Taliban (organization banned in Russia) junta rule in Afghanistan during the last two months.

Background

Afghanistan is facing the threat of a humanitarian catastrophe, which is of great concern to the international community.

On the one hand, the country is endangered by massive famine due to crop failures caused by a prolonged drought, as well as the degradation of agricultural land.

On the other hand, the escalation of the military conflict and the recent seizure of power by the Taliban (organization banned in Russia) have significantly aggravated the situation.

This led to the termination of the work of some international humanitarian organizations in the country, as well as to the complication of the provision of humanitarian assistance from outside, including financial aid.
