Germany may reconsider the Nord Stream 2 deal after the elections

20.09.2021, Berlin.

Agreements previously reached to build the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline may be revised by the German parliament, which will be formed after the elections, said Urs Unkauf, the representative of the Federal Association for Economic Development and Foreign Trade of Germany on September 20,  Izvestia newspaper reports.

The official noted that one of the reasons for the revision could be Germany’s Green Party victory in the parliamentary elections.

“Since the Green Party politicians have not forged a working relationship with Russia in recent years, it may also affect the course of the new government,” stressed Unkauf.

In addition, the agreements with Russia may be revised even if the Greens do not receive a parliamentary majority in the ruling coalition, continued the politician. In fact, the new environmental program in Germany is of great importance today. Therefore, Germany’s projects linked to energy will most likely be revised by the new government when it is formed.

On September 26, Germany will hold its parliamentary elections. After the elections, the new German parliament will elect a new chancellor, who will take over the post which Angela Merkel is leaving.

Earlier, Angela Merkel reached an agreement with the US about the completion of the Nord Stream 2 project. Construction of both pipelines has recently been fully accomplished. Nevertheless, the agreements reached between the US and Germany did not imply any written commitments, therefore, they could potentially be revised at any time.
