Russian Foreign Minister: US anti-Russian policy has not changed since Geneva

06.09.2021, Moscow.

There have been no serious changes in relations between Moscow and Washington since Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden met in Geneva, and America continues to impose its agenda on Russia’s domestic policy, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on September 6 in a speech at a Moscow National Pensions School Cadet Corps of the Russian Defense Ministry.

“It is always better to meet and talk than not to do so, and in that sense, of course, the summit in Geneva was, I think, positive. It brought no breakthroughs, no radical changes in relations. The United States still consider themselves entitled to impose their agenda on our domestic policy and accuse us of meddling in their internal affairs without presenting any specific facts,” the head of the Foreign Ministry said.

Lavrov said that negotiations should be based on mutual respect and supported by facts. However, at the moment, he said, the US side is using tactics of unsubstantiated accusations against Russia, in particular in the cases of Navalny, the Skripals, the Malaysian aircraft downed over Donbass.

“For each of these accusations, sanctions have been announced against our country. This is dishonest simply on the part of our collective Western partner,” the foreign minister stressed.

Lavrov notes that the same situation is happening with Nord Stream-2, although Biden and the US administration understand that it is no longer possible to stop the project.

“But if you understand that you are obsessed with some unrealizable task, then just common sense should tell you to leave it and do something realistic,” Lavrov noted.

He also stressed that the United States of America is realizing that the need to create system mechanisms for discussing mutual concerns is overdue. Lavrov emphasized that Russia also has its claims, but the Russian side provides facts.

Lavrov reminded that in Geneva Joe Biden said that Russian hackers allegedly interfered in the work of infrastructure facilities in the US, but the US side refuses to accept Russia’s longstanding proposals to establish sustainable channels of dialogue, including law enforcement and special services on cybersecurity issues.

Also, according to the minister, there is no mutual understanding on the issue of strengthening arms control.
