Putin and Xi Jinping agree to strengthen coordination on Afghanistan

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to strengthen cooperation on the situation in Afghanistan, REGNUM news agency reported on August 25.

“China is ready to strengthen dialogue on Afghanistan with Russia and other members of the international community,” the Chinese leader said. According to China Central Television, Putin agreed to Xi Jinping’s proposal to strengthen coordination on the Afghan issue.

“We intend to establish a political framework for open and tolerant interaction with all stakeholders in Afghanistan,” Xi Jinping said.

He stressed that all political forces in Afghanistan must distance themselves from terrorist organizations. In addition, the Chinese leader said that China intends to help Russia’s development in accordance with its national specifics. He expressed support for Russia’s efforts to protect its sovereignty and state security.

The “West / Interaction 2021” military exercise of the armed forces of Russia and China, which ended on August 13, showed that both countries have reached the highest level of interaction in the military sphere. According to Ye Hailin, deputy director of the Center for South Asia Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the relationship between Russia and China goes beyond the alliance and the level of their cooperation exceeds that of many allies.
