Venezuelan Foreign Minister demands US not to interfere with talks

15.08.2021, Caracas.

The United States must stop the blackmailing and pressure on talks that has begun between the Bolivarian government and the radical opposition wing, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza said on his Twitter page on August 15.

The US criminal sanctions are hurting the Venezuelan people and preventing political dialogue. They must eliminate them because they are illegal and vicious. Stop the blackmailing and pressure,” the head of the diplomatic office explained.

The Minister referred to the statement issued by the chief correspondent of TeleSUR Aissa Garcia, who stated that the US is ready to review sanctions policy if the Venezuelan government promotes “significant progress” in the negotiations with the United Opposition Platform in Mexico.

On August 1 the talks between the Venezuelan government and part of the radical opposition started in Mexico under the mediation of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Norway. Before the beginning of the dialogue, a framework document – a memorandum of understanding – was signed in which the parties expressed their intention to reach specific agreements on political rights, electoral guarantees and the schedule for the upcoming elections.

Also during the dialogue, it is planned to address the abolition of unilateral coercive measures against Caracas, the restitution of assets, the denial of mutual violence as well as guarantees for the agreement execution.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro called the beginning of the talks themselves and the signing of the memorandum a political triumph that could finally put an end to the political crisis in the country.
