Jordan reopens border with Syria after the deterioration in Deraa

06.08.2021, Damascus.

Jordanian authorities reopened the land border crossing with the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR), a Rossa Primavera News Agency source in Syria reports on August 6.

Trucks freely cross the Syrian-Jordanian border since the Nassib land border crossing resumed its operations after being closed for a week,” reports the source.

On July, Jordan closed the border with Syria. The escalation of violence in the province of Deraa, where clashes between the government forces and the militants have resumed, caused the closure.

Border crossing was prohibited for both civilians and commercial freight services.

On July 28, militants violated a ceasefire and attacked Syrian army positions in the southern Syrian city of Deraa. Syrian government forces responded to the attack, starting positional battles in the city with the use of artillery.

On June 30, the sides agreed on a temporary ceasefire after Russia intervened. The Syrian army demanded that the militants in Deraa surrender their weapons and return to civilian life or leave for the northern regions of the country, as it was done in other de-escalation zones in Syria when they were closed. The terrorists refused.

Then, the government forces announced the start of a large-scale counter-terrorist operation in the region. However, the Syrian army has not done more than the statement.

Now, the situation is in limbo while intermittent shelling can be heard in the city.
