Kurginyan: Putin “hammers a stake” into hopes for Russia’s unity with Europe

The President of Russia Vladimir Putin hammered a stake into the hopes for unity of Russia and the West with his article “On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians,” political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on July 15 on the Tema program on the Union channel.

Liberal groups in Russia still hope for a return to the idea of unity of Russia, Europe, and the USA, but “this article is a stake hammered into these hopes,” Sergey Kurginyan said.

Kurginyan listed the steps the Russian authorities have made that suggest the end of the idea for Russia to integrate into the West. “An absolutely different concept of the Russian Federation’s security has been adopted; Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said a lot, and this Putin’s article tops this triangle.”

Putin’s article is not “a minor document” that someone prepared and Putin signed, the political scientist noted.

“This is a cry of his [Putin’s] heart, which was put in a measured and still extremely furious manner, and this is about Russia on its way to completing its understanding of itself, quite gently, but very, very slowly creeping away from the function of integration into the Western civilization that was imposed on it,” the leader of Essence of Time explained.

The process of completing the understanding of its sovereignty is “extremely difficult” to Russia, Sergey Kurginyan stressed. He indicated that it will not be an easy task to turn the tide of all the domestic trends in Russia, especially because the USA, “having its claws into Russia’s body, will not let it go easily.”

“The process will be difficult and painful, but it is on its way. And Putin’s article is another phase in this process as well as the concept of national security and everything Lavrov is saying: the point is how we complete our understanding of our sovereignty,” the expert concluded.

According to the philosopher, it is time to say straightforwardly what sovereignty is and how many sovereign states exist on the globe apart from China. We must understand how Russia should bring its strategic sovereignty to a complete form.

“What does it [sovereignty] mean from an ideological, conceptual, metaphysical point of view, what kind of sovereignty is it? What opposes it? Where are our red lines here in the main issue ― on what Ukraine is?” Kurginyan pointed out problematic issues.
