Ukrainian Foreign Ministry: Russia's complaint to the European Court of Human Rights is propaganda

22.07.2021, Kiev.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine believes that Russia’s complaint against Ukraine in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has no chance, and it was filed with a propaganda purpose. This was stated by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitriy Kuleba on July 22, during a joint visit to Donbass with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó.

“Without interfering with the justice of the European Court of Human Rights, I can absolutely assure that this claim has no chance of being satisfied. And it was filed by Russia solely for propaganda purposes. There will be no other results, except for information noise and wasted court time on writing a response to this submission,” Kuleba stated.

We would remind you that this is the first time Russia has filed an interstate complaint with the ECtHR. According to the Russian Prosecutor-General’s Office, it accuses Ukraine of violating the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

The complaint concerns events that followed “the violent change of power in Ukraine in February 2014,” such as the Ukrainian authorities’ cover-up of nationalist activities, discrimination against Russian-speaking residents, and the killing and harming of Donbas residents.
