Lavrov: Russia uses military base in Tajikistan to protect its allies

Russia will protect its allies from threats from Afghanistan, including the use of a military base in Tajikistan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on July 7 during the press conference following talks with the Laotian Foreign Minister.

At the press conference, the Russian Foreign Minister commented on the tense situation on the Tajik-Afghan border. Lavrov said, “We will do everything necessary, including by employing the capabilities of the Russian military base deployed on Tajikistan’s border with Afghanistan, to prevent any aggressive encroachments on our allies.”

The minister also stressed that all obligations within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) remain in force. “Representatives of the CSTO Secretariat have visited the Tajik-Afghan border to take stock of the situation and will report their conclusions to the Permanent Council,” the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
