Kurginyan: Elections in Armenia decides the fate of the Caucasus, and hence that of Russia

22.06.2021, Moscow.

The elections in Armenia will determine the fate of the Caucasus, and hence that of Russia, said political scientist, philosopher and leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on his The Meaning of the Game program on June 18.

According to Kurginyan, those who believe that Russia needs a weak leader in Armenia and that the Russian authorities support Pashinyan are mistaken.

“When you brought Pashinyan into power, with your mass rallies and other things – did you ask the Russians? Maybe they wanted the anti-Russian Pashinyan in power even then? Why are you whining now about what is now an incomprehensible and vanishingly weak factor?” the political scientist asked.

“The Russian authorities cannot be against Kocharyan. This is clear to anyone who understands how it works,” Kurginyan stressed.

Essence of Time’s leader explained that Armenia is an important factor that affects the fate of Russia itself:

“I believe that the fate of the Caucasus, and hence that of Russia, lie on the scales, that a Southern front has emerged. This front will be anti-Russian in any case, and it is the most dangerous for Russia. It is more dangerous than the Western front. The Southern front will be the most important front for the destruction of Russia and its subjugation to certain forces, which for some reason can be called some sort of crazy ‘Eurasian’ forces, and which are anti-Russian and obviously occupational in relation to the Russian people.”

According to the political scientist, there are certain pro-Turkish forces in the Russian political elite, but it will very quickly become obvious that such a bet is disastrous; therefore, the events in Armenia are extremely important for Russia:

“Is Armenia big or small factor on the scales? Is it a grain of sand or a multiton weight? Of course, it is a grain of sand in a huge struggle, which is now clouded by wild delusions and enormous manipulations of all kinds of Turkish and other lobbies. But it won’t last long; very soon the proximity of Ukraine and Turkey on the question of Crimea will become clear, and very soon Turkey’s expansion into the Volga region and further will become clear. Many other things will become clear very quickly.”

“I feel that a great geopolitical game is unfolding to the detriment of my homeland – Russia, to the detriment of its national interests. That is why I am especially obliged to speak the way I do…,” Sergey Kurginyan addressed the citizens of Armenia.

After the defeat in Nagorno-Karabakh, Pashinyan and his entourage made statements that were perceived by many in the country as pro-Turkish.

On March 20, commenting on relations with Turkey, Pashinyan said that it was necessary “change a viewpoint on the region” to form a favorable atmosphere around Armenia in the region.

On March 28 the Secretary of Armenian Security Council Armen Grigorian stated that the approaches of Yerevan towards Turkey should be adjusted. When asked by a TV host whether Turkey is an enemy state, Grigoryan said, “If we are going to unblock (connections) in the region, there should be certain adjustments in our approaches, and we are working in this direction”.

Update

Snap parliamentary elections were held in Armenia on June 20. The election commission said on Monday that the party of Armenia’s current Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan won 53.9% of the vote. This is a rather surprising result considering a Gallup poll released on June 18. According to this poll, 28.7% of the respondents were ready to vote for Robert Kocharyan’s Armenia bloc, and 25.2% were ready to vote for Nikol Pashinyan’s Civic Agreement bloc. The bloc led by former President Robert Kocharyan and certain other parties have already refused to accept the results of elections.
