Russian Senator reacts to threat of new sanctions after the summit: “This should be expected”

20.06.2021, Moscow.

The hardening of the US position on Russia, which followed within days after the summit of the leaders of the two countries in Geneva, was expected, the chairman of the Commission on Information Policy, Aleksey Pushkov said, as REGNUM news agency informed on June 20.

Earlier, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stressed that Washington would continue to impose sanctions against Russian companies constructing the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. According to Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov, who returned to Washington on June 20, such statements of US officials about possible new sanctions are not the signal that was expected after the meeting between Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin in Geneva.

“This should be expected,” Pushkov said, explaining that there is a tendency in Russia to view summits as the beginning of a new phase of relations – towards their improvement.

Nevertheless, the senator is sure, that the US authorities are pursuing a different approach. Thus, from the very beginning, the United States ruled out the possibility of resetting and made no secret of their intention to prevent the launch of Nord Stream 2 in every possible way, if they could not prevent the construction.

“The White House has never even hinted at the possibility of lifting or at least partially revising sanctions. Both Biden and Blinken emphasized from the very beginning that they viewed the summit as a platform to discuss important issues for the United States, not as a reason to change attitudes toward Russia and its policies,” the senator pointed out.

“After the summit, tensions in relations have slightly decreased, but all disagreements – on Nord Stream 2, Ukraine, Donbass, Syria, etc. – have remained and have not disappeared,” Pushkov concluded.
