Kurginyan assesses the chances of the US changing its position on Ukraine

13.06.2021, Moscow.

It is very unlikely that the situation in Ukraine and Donbass will change considerably after the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Joe Biden, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on June 4 on the air of the Topic program on the Union TV channel.

According to Kurginyan, the possibility of a significant change in the situation around Ukraine and Donbass is minimal since the United States and Russia have neither a joint agenda nor mutual trust.

“I would like to believe in this; and probably, this option is possible, as it does not have a zero probability, but it is still extremely unlikely. It seems to me that any such summit requires certain conditions, such as mutual trust. There also should be a clear joint agenda, within which at least some agreement can be reached,” the political scientist stressed.

He noted that the United States could encourage Ukraine to implement the Minsk agreements, to reconciliate with the LPR and DPR, to meet all the conditions described in the Minsk agreements, that means a real confederalization of Ukraine. However, the US is not interested in this.

“All this is possible, but the United States needs a different Ukraine, which will be as conflict-prone and destructive as possible, and which will, in particular, influence Europe with its destructiveness since the US’ love for Europe is very relative.” said Kurginyan.

According to the political scientist, even if Russia has some “gifts” that could encourage Biden to soften the US position on Ukraine, this will not change two important factors.

On the one hand, the Ukrainian authorities have already gone too far in the attitude towards Russia and Donbass, which is determined by the Right Sector (organization banned in Russia), and this is not so easy to stop. On the other hand, the US Democratic Party has been guided by the concept of political scientist Zbigniew Brzezinski, according to which Russia cannot be an empire without Ukraine.
