Russian and Syrian Joint Coordination Headquarters: Western countries' humanitarian assistance to Syria destabilizes the Middle East

13.04.2021, Moscow.

The Brussels conference on Syria demonstrated the West’s reluctance to help Syrians living in territories liberated from the militants a joint statement of the Russian and Syrian Joint Coordination Headquarters published on April 12 on the website of the Russian Defense Ministry reads.

The heads of the headquarters point out that the conference in Brussels was held without participation of or consultation with Syrian authorities. This demonstrates “the reluctance of Western countries to provide real and effective assistance to citizens in the territory controlled by the government of the country.”

The joint statement stresses that the decisions made at the conference will maintain instability both in Syria itself and in the Middle East as a whole. For refugees to return, it is necessary to restore the destroyed infrastructure, water supply, sewerage and electricity. But the West does not want to spend money on this and help refugees.

“Western countries allocate funds to prevent their return to their homeland, to force them to stay in the camps in the territories of the host countries, where there are no conditions for a decent life for these refugees,” the statement reads.

The heads of the headquarters believes that such an approach to humanitarian assistance will lead to the revival of terrorism and social, economic and migration crises in Syria.

On March 29 and 30 the European Union and the UN held the Brussels V Conference on Syria. The delivery of humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees and internally displaced people in Syria were discussed during this conference.

The conference raised $6.4 billion out of an announced $10 billion, $4.4 billion of which is for 2021 and $2 billion for 2022. Another $7 billion lenders are willing to give on repayment terms.

Most of the money will go to help refugees living outside of Syria or in areas not controlled by Damascus. The Russian Foreign Ministry notes that such humanitarian aid often does not reach Syrian citizens and ends up in the hands of militants.
