Russia can protect Donbass from an attack by Ukraine, military expert Alexey Leonkov, editor of the magazine Arsenal Otechestva (Armory of the Motherland), said in an interview with Rossa Primavera News Agency on March 28.
“By all means, Russia has the army, the Air Forces and the Black Sea Fleet for this purpose,” the expert said.
According to Leonkov, Russia cannot leave its citizens in trouble. There are about 600,000 Russian citizens living on the territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.
Therefore, Russia will be obliged to protect the Donbass in case of a direct conflict with Ukraine.
In recent days, Ukraine has been actively shelling the contact line in Donbass. The country’s authorities are pulling military forces to the border. Experts believe that Ukraine will soon launch a full-scale military operation against Donbass defenders.
