Kurginyan: Ukrainian authorities deprive their country of a chance for survival

13.03.2021, Moscow.

Ukraine needs to change its current structure and become a confederation in order to implement the Minsk Agreements, said political scientist, crisis analyst, leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on March 10 on the program Topic on the Donetsk Union channel.

Ukraine agreed to change its current state structure when it agreed to fulfill the Minsk Agreements under the external political pressure. The Minsk Agreements cannot be implemented until such changes are made,” explained Kurginyan.

The Minsk Agreements provide security guarantees to Donbass, allowing Donbass to have its own political, economic, military, and border authorities, stressed the political scientist.  However, if Donbass will have such rights, the rest of Ukraine’s regions in the south and west will demand them too.

This means that Ukraine will transition towards a confederation, which is the last chance for this state to survive. However, the Ukrainian government and its Western allies absolutely do not want any of this. Therefore, the implementation of the Minsk Agreements is impossible,” stressed Kurginyan.

The Ukrainian authorities are acting in the completely opposite way regarding compared to what the agreements require, points out the analyst. They want to convince Russia, the guarantor of the Minsk II protocol, that these agreements should be abandoned altogether.

On March 9, Andriy Yermak, the head of the Presidential Administration, said that France and Germany had drafted a new plan for a peaceful settlement in Donbass, and allegedly, it is ready to be signed. After that, it will be Russia’s turn whether to accept this plan or abandon it.

What exactly will Ukraine or Germany come up with, what will they offer? This is called ‘destroy the Minsk Agreements at any cost’. Why would Russia need this?” asked Kurginyan.

All of the negotiation maneuvering by Ukraine and European mediators are imitating and not implementing the agreements aimed at reaching peace in Ukraine, noted the leader of the Essence of Time movement. The Minsk Agreements were a convincing victory for Russian diplomacy, recalled the political scientist. The UN Security Council and the heads of state unanimously adopted the resolution on the Minsk Agreements.

The Russian side is convinced that it is a very simple matter: you either fulfill the Minsk Agreements, meaning – give Donbass special status, and restructure your country into a different format; or you abandon the Minsk Agreements, meaning you give Donbass complete freedom. This will give Donbass a new set of opportunities for moving in the desired direction, ” concluded Sergey Kurginyan.
