27.02.2021, Yerevan.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s decree on dismissing Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces Onik Gasparyan is fundamentally contrary to the country’s Constitution, said Armenian President Armen Sarksyan on February 27, the presidential press service reports.

“We can conclude that the project of the decree is fundamentally contrary to the Constitution,” said the president. The head of the state added that the project had been studied in the presidential administration and discussed in detail with leading lawyers and independent experts.

Sarksyan stressed that he does not support any political force and take decisions being guided only by the national interests.

According to the presidential press service, the decree with the president’s objections was returned to Pashinyan.

It is to be noted that on February 25 the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces demanded the resignation of PM Nikol Pashinyan. The statement was signed by 40 top officers, including the chief of the general staff and commanders of five army corps. The same day Nikol Pashinyan called the statement “the attempted coup” and signed the decree on dismissing chief of the general staff Onik Gasparyan.

At the rally of his supporters, Pashinyan demanded the president of the country to sign the decree, “If Sarksyan does not sign my decision, he will join the coup d’état.” The Armenian President has not yet signed the document and declared the inadmissibility of involving the president in political processes.
