Kurginyan on Russia and Europe: Dating for 33 years is too long

23.02.2021, Donetsk.

Relations between Russia and Europe seem to be exhausted and fatigued, political scientist, philosopher, and leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on February 18 in the Topic program on the Donetsk Union TV channel.

The political scientist commented on Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s statement that Russia is ready to break with the European Union.

Behind Lavrov’s words, behind all the caution, behind all the usual style of desire to get closer to the West and not to split with it, another reality looms. There is an exhaustion, a perceptible exhaustion of the whole paradigm of rapprochement with Europe,” says Kurginyan.

Kurginyan is sure that rapprochement with Europe is impossible because Europe is not sovereign. The political analyst said how in the early 1990s German Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s advisor told him about rapprochement with Russia and dreaming that the Americans would be “thrown into the Atlantic Ocean.” “All of these huge European-Russian expectations of the 1990s – German-Russian expectations being first among them – can no longer be the topic of discussion.” Kurginyan stressed,

He noted that Russia is tired of its desire to get closer to Europe, “Fatigue shapes the whole atmosphere of Russian-European relations.

The philosopher explained Russia’s fatigue from relations with Europe with a metaphor: a man has been courting his fiance for many years, and after 33 years he grew tired of it. Nothing different happened compared to the 25th or the 31st year of courtship. The bridegroom simply got tired, and gave up his desire.

Kurginyan stressed that the inertia of this desire to get closer to Europe is still colossal. A large part of the Russian elite is behind this inertia. Unlike the top brass, these people will not be subjected to sanctions. Supporters of a pro-Western course come from both  business and bureaucracy, which wants to “visit Europe, make proper use of the property it has there, and that their children could continue to study – peacefully, well-fed, and God forbid there be any clouds in that sky“.

The gap is growing between the pro-western and the anti-western forces, the expert pointed out. The majority of Russian people and the top of the elite are on the anti-western side, “The top of the Russian elite has already realized that it will be persecuted, and has come to terms with the thought,” concluded the leader of the Essence of Time movement.
