Russian Foreign Ministry accuses the US and Turkey of creating a military threat in the Black Sea

The joint US and Turkish military exercises in the Black Sea pose a threat to peace and stability, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on February 18 during a briefing.

According to Zakharova, it is obvious to everyone that the exercises have an anti-Russian orientation. “They are taking place near our country’s borders, near our Black Sea coast, thus threatening peace and stability,” she said.

She characterized as provocative statements by Pentagon and State Department officials that these exercises contribute to security in Europe. According to the representative of the Foreign Ministry, it would have been much better for security if the US had influenced Kiev regarding the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

On February 9, the press service of the US Sixth Fleet reported about joint US-Turkish exercises in the Black Sea, which were aimed at finding and detecting a submarine of maneuver enemy. The US destroyers Donald Cook and Porter, Turkish frigates Orucreis and Turgutreis, two Turkish F-16 fighters and a Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft took part in the exercise.
