Russian diplomat calls it wartime censorship when Ukraine bans TV channels

12.02.2021, Moscow.

The West is introducing censorship on news media outlets as it is done during a military confrontation, said Maxim Buyakevich, Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the OSCE, assessing the positive reaction in the West to blocking of opposition TV channels in Ukraine, reports RIA Novosti on February 12.

“In fact, the West is introducing wartime censorship against Russian news resources,” stressed the diplomat. Not only Russian news resources but any others that do not fit into the “block thinking”, clarified the diplomat.

“Banned Ukrainian TV channels had nothing to do with Russia. They simply expressed an opinion which was opposing to the one that belongs to Ukrainian President Zelensky, and the current government in Kiev,” emphasized the Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the OSCE. He noted that these channels simply “reflected an opinion from a different corner of the political spectrum”.

Now, “the masks are coming off” and the West is directly supporting the ban on news resources unfavorable to the authorities, believes the diplomat.

In essence, an information war has been declared against everything that does not agree with the official viewpoint in the West – both within Western states and in Western-centric countries, like in Ukraine today,” said the diplomat.

On February 2, President Vladimir Zelensky signed the decree banning 112 Ukraine, NewOne and ZIK TV channels for five years. At the same time, president imposed sanctions on Taras Kozak, a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Ukrainian Parliament, editorial note) from the Opposition Platform – For life faction, the owner of these news outlets.
