A reason why the West attacked Belarus was its dialogue with China — Lukashenko

11.02.2021, Minsk.

The relations between Belarus and China were a reason why the West attacked Belarus in the end of last year, the President of the republic Aleksandr Lukashenko said on February 11 at the opening ceremony of the 4th All-Belarusian People’s Assembly.

Lukashenko said, “Our geostrategic cooperation with China was a reason why the West attacked Belarus in the end of last year. But this must not stop us.”

According to the president, Europeans told him directly that Belarus must distance from China, and that “China must not be present in the center of Europe.” However, when the Western countries attacked the Belarusian economy with their sanctions five or six years ago, it was China that offered support. “Then, China opened its door for us, and we entered,” Lukashenko said.

Lukashenko believes that Belarus cannot block China’s only way to Europe, this “small window” through Belarus. “We cannot do so, because we are grateful people, and we remember what happened those days,” the president added.

Lukashenko added that the development policies of China and Belarus “are similar to a large extent,” which strengthens the relations between the two countries. China supports Belarus in housing and social infrastructure development; therefore, the presence of Chinese companies in the country will continue to receive support, Lukashenko concluded.
