Uzbek expert: Ukraine turns into a transit base for Islamists

20.01.2021, Tashkent.

Ukraine is turning into a transit base for Islamists from Syria and recruitment sites in Central Asian republics, director of the NGO Center for Studying Regional Threats in Uzbekistan Viktor Mikhailov said in his investigation. The article was published on the News of Uzbekistan website on January 18.

In his article, drawing on the example of an Uzbek terrorist, Mikhailov notes several striking details of such stories. First is the increasingly frequent use of Ukrainian territory by members of the Interior Ministry for treatment of militants, training, supply of goods, etc.

Secondly, Mikhailov notes that human rights organizations portray members of international terrorist organizations who have come to the attention of the Uzbek security services as victims of a totalitarian regime.

Thirdly, there is a whole network of recruiters and field commanders linked to them.

Mikhailov concludes that the new generation of field commanders is very different from the generation of the 1990s, when field commanders fought for the idea, were educated, courageous, daring.

In the opinion of the expert, the new generation of field commanders are petty people, wallowing in lies and stealing. These field commanders and the gangs organized by them have no future.
