A member of the US Democratic Party assuming the presidency will exacerbate the domestic political struggle in Russia, and it will inevitably affect its economy, political scientist, social activist and the leader of the Essence of Time social movement Sergey Kurginyan said on January 17 in an interview to the Union Donetsk channel.
Kurginyan spoke about conventional and non-conventional factors that will affect the Russian economy after Biden’s presidential term begins. The conventional factor is the drop in oil prices after Democrats win in the US.
“Conventional Republicans represent the military industrial complex and big oil. Democrats are regular manufacturing industry. The latter needs low oil prices. In contrast, the Texans and the military industry need high oil prices. Therefore [conventional] Republicans coming to power are usually associated with rising prices,” the expert explained.
However, the political struggle in the USA also affects the political struggle in Russia. Russian political groups are split into two sides: those who support sovereignty and self-reliance, and those who want to become part of the West. This dualism has prevented Russia from transforming its industry to a self-sufficient state, the political scientist commented.
Russia is one of the few countries that could quickly become self-sufficient due its natural resources and many other factors, Kurginyan said. He believes that then “all these sanctions would not do anything at all to us.”
“If we continue wasting our time in these economic international waters, then powerful sanctions (and Biden can impose them) can seriously damage everything here. Very seriously,” the leader of Essence of Time warned.
