Iranian Foreign Ministry: Turkish President undermines Azerbaijani sovereignty

11.12.2020, Tehran.

The Turkish President’s statements the regarding the Iranian territory caused harsh criticism from the Islamic Republic, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote on December 11 on his Twitter page.

Zarif commented on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s speech at a parade in Baku, during which he read a poem that referred to territory south of the Aras river seized by Iran.

“Pres. Erdogan was not informed that what he ill-recited in Baku refers to the forcible separation of areas north of Aras from Iranian motherland. Didn’t he realize that he was undermining the sovereignty of the Republic of Azerbaijan?” Zarif wrote.

During the same parade, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that a number of Armenian territories, including the capital Yerevan and Lake Sevan, are ancestral Azerbaijani lands.
