Russian war correspondent: Erdoğan is trying to settle Karabakh with militants from Syria

25.11.2020, Moscow.

Turkish authorities want to settle Karabakh territories under Azerbaijan’s control with Syrian militants, military correspondent Semyon Pegov said on November 25 during Moscow-Yerevan video conference.

According to the Russian military correspondent, there is information from sources in Syria that it is planned to settle these territories with Turkmen families that are ready to move after 9 years of horrors of Syrian war.

In his opinion, this is how Erdogan is trying to preserve the militants fighting core, which otherwise could be eliminated by the Russian Aerospace Forces, which has recently intensified its efforts to eliminate the pro-Turkish fighters in Idlib.

“In Syria, the Turks are already addressing people with such an appeal, offering help if they want to move to Artsakh. Еhe same militants who have not left Karabakh will create the fighting core,” Pegov said.

On the other hand, according to Pegov, Erdoğan thus wants to avoid the presence of radicals who dream of reviving the Ottoman Empire in Turkey.

“In Turkey itself, such radicalism is not necessary, but they can be useful in the Transcaucasia,” said the war correspondent.

During the escalation in Karabakh in September-November 2020, Turkey deployed thousands of militants from northern Syria to Azerbaijan to take part in the hostilities against the Artsakh Defense Army. Armenian and Karabakh authorities, as well as Russia, Syria, France and the United States, confirmed this information.

The trilateral agreement signed on the night of November 10 by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the Russian and Azerbaijani presidents stipulates ceasing the hostilities in Karabakh, deploying Russian peacekeepers and transferring a number of Nagorno-Karabakh districts to Azerbaijan.

According to the trilateral statement, the Russian Federation’s peacekeeping contingent consisting of 1960 servicemen, 90 armored personnel carriers, 380 vehicles and special equipment will be deployed in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone. Russian cargo aircraft continue to deliver equipment for the peacekeepers in the conflict zone.
