Expert: The US increasingly rely on the use of PMCs abroad in recent years

30.10.2020, Moscow.

The US authorities increasingly rely on the use of private military companies (PMCs) to solve their foreign policy issues, said Dmitri Trenin, director of the Carnegie Moscow Center, on October 30 during his report at the Ogarkov Readings conference.

“The fact that PMCs are increasingly participating in the US military operations should be recognized as a new reality. These PMCs may act autonomously in those cases when the direct use of force is considered in Washington as inappropriate,” said the expert.

The failed US operation to overthrow the Venezuelan government is an example of such an expansion. Starting with the first Gulf War, Washington chose the policy of “military interventionism“.

It must be mentioned that the US deliberately choose the week countries, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yugoslavia, as victims of military aggression.

“Usually, the use of military force results in the US defeating an incomparably weak adversary, or forcing it to surrender,” stressed Trenin stressed.

However, the US has failed to reach its declared nation building goals after the military victory in the defeated countries. Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq are the examples. Though in regard to the latter, the US had “delegated the main responsibility to the European members of NATO.”
