Kurginyan: Iran's political system is more stable than US democracy

22.09.2020, Moscow.

The mantra promoted in the US about democracy being the best possible political system does not correspond to reality. Iran shows extreme stability of the political system, combining the power of the Shiite spiritual order and democracy, said the leader of the Essence of Time movement, political scientist Sergey Kurginyan on September 18 on the air of the Evening with Vladimir Solovyov TV program on Russia One channel.

In response to the question of what is holding Iran together, Kurginyan said that, in his opinion, it is “the great Persian tradition, which is not going anywhere.

Shiite Sufism with its esotericism, as well as Greater Khorasan traditions will never disappear: “that is the core”, stressed Kurginyan.

“The second part of this stability, which is ideal from my point of view, is the fact that strategy and the higher goals are defined by Qom (Religious Capital of Iran). And there is no democracy there, there’s a certain ‘chemistry’ – those who elect the Ayatollahs are there, ” thinks the political scientist.

Furthermore, these spiritual leaders established a certain political system where elements of democracy may exist. “We give you such and such framework, and you figure decide what’s next: you can have democracy and the Mejlis, etc.,” says Qom. It can say at any moment that “enough is enough” if it thinks that red lines were crossed, stressed Kurginyan.

“As for me, the Iranian model is very promising and very stable internally because of its nuances,” said Kurginyan.

As a form of a civil society, the Iranian spiritual leadership has a popular militia called Basij. “If the Islamic Revolutionary Guards are not enough, the Basij will come and tell you who controls the streets,” noted the political scientist.
