Kurginyan: COVID-19 could open the floodgates for human genetic engineering

22.08.2020, Moscow.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on humanity may have much more serious consequences than changes in lifestyle and the economic situation, said the leader of the Essence of Time movement and political scientist Sergey Kurginyan on August 21 in a new issue of “The Meaning of the Game” broadcast released on the movement’s YouTube channel.

“Strengthening US dominance in the 21st century, is that the only objective of those transformation advocates who intend to turn COVID-19 into what they call a transformational or transformative event? Or are they aiming for something more?”, asks Sergey Kurginyan.

The situation developing around the pandemic issue can impact not only everyday life and economic activity, but it can become an impetus to opening the floodgates “to human genome engineering and manipulations with it,” explains the political scientist.

Genome engineering is no longer a fantasy. “A number of researchers have been involved in genome engineering. They have proposed various ways of doing it,” notes Kurginyan. For example, there is a gene targeting method, a technology used to create animal models of human disease in mice. In 2007, Mario Capecchi, Oliver Smithies and Sir Martin J. England were awarded the Nobel Prize for Genetics for its discovery.

However, the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technique based on transcribing CRISP “spacer” sequences into RNA sequences capable of guiding the system to matching sequences of DNA has become more widespread. In 2012, this technique was claimed to be a breakthrough in terms of editing any genome, including the human genome. The experimental use of this new technique immediately began after its discovery, but was not performed on humans.

However, in 2018, the Pandora’s box was opened when Chinese scientist He Jiankui conducted an experiment on a human egg and kept the nature of his experiment in secret. As a result, the genetically edited twins Lulu and Nana were born. Eventually, the scientist claimed that his goal was to achieve a result when all modified people could never become infected with HIV.

Do you see what this is about? We are talking about editing the human genome in such a way that a person can no longer be infected with AIDS. Oh what a joy! However, if it is possible to edit the human genome in such a way that a person cannot get infected with AIDS, why would we not keep editing the genome to get the same results with the awful COVID? Ultimately, why don’t we transform the entire humanity into people who don’t get sick here, or there …, due to the correction of their genome?”, asking Kurginyan.

“In the meantime, what happens to an individual is secondary. The most important thing is not to get sick, and not to infect others,” – is the approach promoted through the “COVID” story, believes the political scientist. During the broadcast, Kurginyan provides his detailed analysis.
