The US army’s occupation of north-eastern Syria aggravates the situation in the country, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said at an online conference of UN Security Council members on August 19.

“The situation in Syria is further aggravated by the continued occupation by the United States of areas in the northeast [of the Syrian Arab Republic],” Nebenzya said. The diplomat added that the protests of tribes added to the already existing problems with ISIL militants (organization banned in Russia) and the humanitarian situation.

Nebenzya also added that the protests of the Arab population against the Kurdish authorities and the US occupation observed in northern Syria.

The diplomat also drew the attention of the UN Security Council to a contract signed by the US company Delta Crescent Energy for the production and processing of oil in the Kurdish regions of Syria. “We deem this deal illegal,” Nebenzya said and asked the US representatives to explain how this deal is consistent with the norms of international law.
