Lavrov: EU’ interest in Belarus is geopolitics, not democracy

19.08.2020, Moscow.

The statements of the European Union and the western neighbors of Minsk are geopolitics, not human rights and democracy rhetoric, according to the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov cited on the Russia One TV channel on August 19.

Sergey Lavrov noted that Belarus’ western neighbors speak about the situation in the country in the framework of their political views, but not in the framework of democracy or respect for human rights.

“What we hear today from the European capitals, first of all from the Baltic States (Lithuania, Estonia), from Poland, and from the European Parliament is not about Lukashenko, human rights, and democracy. It is all about geopolitics. It is about the rules that our western partners want to promote in our everyday life across our continent and elsewhere,” he said.

In the same interview the Russian foreign minister expressed confidence that the Belarusian people are wise and reasonable enough to make their own decision about the current situation in the republic.
