Source: Turkey cuts off tap water supply to residents of northern Syria

14.08.2020, Damascus.

Turkish occupation forces with the support of militants cut off the water supply to the Syrian province of Hasaka on August 13, a Rossa Primavera News Agency source in Syria informed.

According to the source, Turkey with the support of militant gangs cut off the water supply at the Alluk station near the town of Ras al-Ain. As a result, residents of Hasaka province and the city of the same name were left without water.

According to the Syrian SANA agency, Turkish forces reduced the number of water wells operating at the station from 20 to 8 and reduced the number of operating pumps to one. As a result, the station’s tanks have become much slower to fill.

The supply of tap water to millions of people in north-eastern Syria depends on the normal operation conditions of the Alluk station. This is not the first time that Turkish mercenaries have blocked the station’s operation.

The UN has made a statement regarding the inadmissibility of depriving the citizens of water in north-eastern Syria.

Background

On October 9, 2019, Turkey launched the Operation Peace Spring against the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the northern Syria east of the Euphrates River. Ankara announced the following objectives of the operation: to dislodge the Kurds from the 30-40 km of gray area along the entire Syrian-Turkish border east of the Euphrates and then to move into this area Syrian refugees, who fled from the hostilities to the Turkish territory.

Turkey used Ankara-backed Syrian opposition groups as strike groups. The Turkish military supported them with artillery and aviation. The same groups remained in the territories occupied during the operation.

On October 22, 2019 in Sochi, during negotiations between Russia and turkey, a truce agreement was reached. But Turkish-backed militants regularly violated it and opened fire on the Kurds positions in the provinces of Raqqa and Hasakah. The SDF often open return fire. Therefore, the situation in the area, where the Operation Peace Spring is conducted, cannot be called peaceful.
