Cuban authorities condemn Trump's idea of selling Puerto Rico

18.02.2020, Havana.

The offer to sell Puerto Rico demonstrates US contempt for the people of this hemisphere, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla said on his Twitter account on July 16.

“The recently released offer to sell Puerto Rico is a rude manifestation of the US President’s contempt for the people of the hemisphere and explains his affection towards the Monroe Doctrine, a colonial instrument which history of death and suffering is well known,” the Cuban Foreign Minister said.

This is related to a statement made by former acting US Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke in an interview with The New York Times, in which she said that Trump thought about selling the island in 2017, after the island was hit by Atlantic Hurricane of the 5 category Maria. According to official figures, the hurricane killed 48 people on the island and left large parts of the island unplugged for several months after the disaster.

Puerto Rico is a US-dependent territory with the status of “unincorporated organized territory”. The US Constitution has limited power in the territory, the supreme power belongs to the US Congress, but the territory has a self-government system.
