Expert: Separation in US public is unprecedented

10.06.2020, Moscow.

Candidate of political sciences, Director of the Center for North American Studies of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations Viktoriya Zhuravleva expressed her opinion of the situation in the USA on June 10 in a comment to the Rossa Primavera News Agency.

According to the expert, the closest parallel to what is happening in the USA today is the pre-election competition between Clinton and Bush Sr. in 1993, which was taking place during riots in Los Angeles.

“However, the separation in the authorities and in the public is unprecedented,” Zhuravleva said.

She also believes that to date the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic seriously reduce Donald Trump’s chances for re-election. In the USA today, the unemployment rates are the worst since World War Two. However, he still has some time to improve the situation, the expert said. The hard management that the current US president uses to solve problems and to enforce law and order finds support among his basic electorate.

His competitor at the election, Joe Biden, with his position of “washing away the sins of the whites,” relies on the votes of the liberal part of the public and the national minorities. According to Zhuravleva, the competition will be focused around the middle votes between these two poles of the US society.

“I do not think that all the whites are excited to see a kneeled presidential candidate,” the expert said. However, Biden still can improve his chances using democrats’ “passionate desire” to remove Trump, Zhuravleva added.
