Russian Foreign Ministry urges USA to remove its nuclear weapons from Europe

22.05.2020, Moscow.

Washington should remove its non-strategic nuclear weapons from Europe in order to normalize dialogue between Russia and the USA, a spokesman of the Russian Foreign Ministry Sergey Ryabkov said on May 22 in an interview to Kommersant.

The deputy foreign minister pointed out that a large number of US non-strategic nuclear weapons are deployed near the Russian borders.

“In order to normalize the situation and reduce tension in the discussion, the USA should first remove its non-strategic nuclear weapons from Europe, return them to its domestic territory, and thus ensure the fulfillment by Washington itself as well as by its allies, which are non-nuclear states under the Nuclear Weapons Non-Proliferation Treaty, of all its essential articles in their full extent,” the diplomat stressed.

The previous day, Under Secretary for Arms Control Marshall Billingslea shifted the blame for the arms race to Russia and China. According to Billingslea, the US nuclear forces modernization does not affect this process.
