Russia to speak about Ukraine’s violations of Cultural Convention at Council of Europe

20.05.2020, Moscow.

The Permanent Representative of Russia to the Council of Europe Ivan Soltanovsky promised in his comment to TASS of May 20 to raise the issue of Ukraine’s violation of its obligations under the European Cultural Convention at the coming meeting of the Council of Europe (CE) bodies.

He noted that the Ukrainian sanctions against Russian museums and Russian-based scientific organizations grossly violate Articles 2 and 4 of the European Cultural Convention, which was signed and ratified by Ukraine.

“Undoubtedly, Ukrainian authorities’ violation of their international obligations will have consequences,” Soltanovsky believes. He said that this issue will be raised at the meeting of the CE bodies, “which have the right to make decisions regarding the use of the Convention according to Article 6.”

On May 15, the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky revised the sanction list against Russian companies adopted by the previous president Pyotr Poroshenko in 2017. He removed a number of legal entities, and he added to the list a number of Russian cultural institutions such as the Moscow State University, the Hermitage Museum, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, and a number of institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
