Kurginyan: Ukrainian authorities can maintain their power only with repressions

18.05.2020, Moscow.

The Ukrainian authorities can maintain its hold on power only with threats and repressions coming from nationalist gangs, stated political scientist Sergey Kurginyan on May 17 on the air of the Sunday Evening with Vladimir Solovyov TV program on Russia One channel.

“As long as Ukraine lives with its mindlessly imagined identity, and it does, it cannot build a state, and it cannot build a society,” said Kurginyan.

Ukraine’s cultural and historic identity can only be Russian or Soviet, noted the political scientist. However, the current Ukrainian government rejects this identity, and grabs onto what Bandera (Nazi collaborator) supporters came up with.

Since Bandera supporters are only ones who seriously specialize in identity building, this means they have all the cards in their hands”, said Kurginyan.

You threw away the identity which can be used somehow to tie the country together. But if you throw away the country’s identity, you throw away the country. No, we [the Ukrainian authorities – editorial note] will keep the country. How? With repressions by nationalist gangs,” said the political scientist.

Inevitably, after choosing Bandera’s identity there comes the glorification of those criminals who massacred people in the city of Odessa, the admiration of those who give the Nazi salute, notes the scientist.

“Such an identity is deadly to the country,” said Kurginyan.
