Members of the Venezuelan Army have detained 39 deserters who attempted to infiltrate back into the country from Colombia, Minister of Defense for the National Armed Forces of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Vladimir Padrino López said on state television on May 14.

“We have detained 39 deserters while attempting to cross the border,” he stated.

According to Lopez, the deserters were going to make incursions into Venezuela and to take part in attempts to overthrow the legitimate leader of the Bolivarian Republic, Nicolas Maduro. He stressed that this operation was sponsored from abroad.

On May 3, Venezuelan security forces were able to prevent incursions into the country by a mercenary band, among whom were U.S. citizens and members of the private military company Silvercorp. The detained mercenaries have given admissions of guilt. They stated that the Venezuelan opposition was behind the military operation.
