US confirms intention to overthrow legitimate Venezuelan authorities

28.04.2020, Washington.

US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and self-proclaimed interim Venezuelan president Juan Guaidó discussed the transfer of power in Venezuela during the telephone conversation, as reported on the State Department website on April 27.

Pompeo assured Guaidó of the US intention to ensure the transfer of power in Venezuela, after which the US sanctions imposed on Venezuela should be lifted, reports the press service of the Secretary of State.

The interlocutors also discussed the actions of the Venezuelan authorities.

“Secretary Pompeo reaffirmed U.S. commitment to the people of Venezuela and condemned the Maduro regime’s increased repression of Venezuela’s democratic actors and of doctors and journalists telling the truth about the COVID-19 response.  Both Secretary Pompeo and interim President Guaidó strongly condemned Maduro’s blocking of international food and medical assistance, mentions the statement.

On April 8, 90 tons of humanitarian assistance from the UN were delivered to Venezuela. Russia had earlier provided assistance to Venezuela to combat the coronavirus.

The US gave $9 million to Guaidó to purchase everything necessary in the response to the coronavirus. Note that the United States is having considerable difficulties with purchasing the necessary resources to combat infection due to their scarcity.

The Venezuelan President said that the country is able to effectively contain the spread of coronavirus.
