The PRC Ministry of Science and Technology has accepted three COVID-19 vaccines for clinical trials in China on April 14, the ministry reports.

On April 2, Phase II clinical trial of an adenovirus vector-based vaccine began. The vaccine was developed by a team of scientists from the Institute of Military Medicine of the Chinese Army led by Chen Wei. According to the World Health Organization, this is the first vaccine in the world that has reached Phase II clinical trial.

Phase I tests tolerance of a drug product in a small number of volunteers. A safe dose level is selected by gradual dose escalation and assessment of adverse effects.

Phase II involves a larger number of volunteers to establish safe dosage of the drug product. Then, Phase III tests the drug in several thousands of volunteers in a number of study sites to support its efficacy.
