The UN General Assembly blocks Russia's draft resolution to lift sanctions

03.04.2020, New York.

The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Georgia, and Ukraine have blocked a Russian-drafted UN General Assembly resolution calling for the lifting of unilateral sanctions in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. The Permanent Mission of Russia to the UN reported this on April 3.

“As it is known, our document failed to be adopted by consensus. Ukraine, Georgia, UK, US, and EU prevented it,” the Russian mission said.

It also expresses regret that a small group of states committed to the policy of imposing sanctions appeared unready to respond to the call of the UN Secretary-General and refused to cast aside their interests and politicized approaches.

“As a result, it will be much more difficult to give a global and solidary response to the threat of the new pandemic,” the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation emphasizes in the message and it adds that due to such actions by these countries, a huge number of people may suffer, first of all in the developing countries of the world.

Previously it became known that the foreign ministers of NATO countries had discussed countering disinformation as part of a package of measures to combat the coronavirus.
