The UN failed to stop the war in Libya. Will coronavirus be able to stop it?

22.02.2020, Tripoli.

The UN Support Mission in Libya demanded a humanitarian pause to prevent a coronavirus pandemic in the country on March 19. The UN appeal was published through the Mission’s pages on social media.

The UN Mission in Libya welcomes the Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli’s agreement with international calls for an immediate humanitarian pause. The UN is asking the Libyan National Army (LNA) to support this decision.

The UN notes that the humanitarian pause is necessary so that all parties to the Libyan conflict “to rapidly respond to the unprecedented public health challenge posed by COVID-19.”

The Mission in Libya hopes that both sides of the conflict will support the humanitarian truce with assistance from the UN in accordance with the draft ceasefire agreement of February 23, developed in Geneva within the framework of the intra-Libyan 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC).

No cases of coronavirus infection in Libya have been recorded yet.
